Credit repair services make confusing. They claim that you can repair "bad" loans so that you can get the impression that if your credit is bad, you can delete the erroneous data to your report. Many people with poor credit rating buy in their claims hoping to increase their credit score in order to improve their chances of a credit, credit card or other form of credit. What they find is, however, that any credit repair service that promises to erase legitimate bad credit is either lying or illegal activity.
If you are considering using a credit repair service, there are several things you need to do and consider.
Get a copy of your credit report from the three major credit reporting companies - Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. These three agencies have set up a website that allows consumers to get a free copy of their credit information once every twelve months. To get your free report, please click here.
Check carefully your credit report to see where there is inaccurate information. If you have a dispute with one of the charges on your report, you should consider calling a credit repair service.
Before deciding on a credit repair service, you should be familiar with The Credit Repair Organizations Act. This law has been designed to protect consumers from credit repair services that make their money and give them little or nothing back.
A credit repair company is legally obliged to give you a brochure called "Consumer Credit File Rights Under State and Federal Law", which explains the law.
Some of the law provisions state that a credit repair company can not: free of charge for all services until they are fully completed; Provide all services until a contract has been signed, you received the booklet declaring your rights and giving a waiting period of three days; Do not make any claims that are untrue.
Using Credit Repair Companies
Even if a credit repair companies from a person's credit information can not legally remove bad credit information, they can help a person with inaccurate information to resolve their credit information. Often, when a consumer orders a copy of his credit information he finds inaccurate information about them for various reasons. Contacting the credit company that corrects the inaccurate information and correcting information is often a time-consuming, frustrating task.
For a fee, a credit repair company can get the work done to get it corrected for consumers. You can document the error, send a letter that reports the error and continue to follow up with conversations on the credit card company down to the credit report of the error. Of course, all this can be done by the consumer himself, but many choose a credit company to handle the headache repair.
If there is a negative legitimate claim on your credit report - say distressed loans or got behind on payments by credit card, a credit repair service can not legally remove the claim. Some repair services advise clients to do things like creating a new credit identity using false social insurance numbers, names or employee IDs. If your credit repair service advises you to do this, do not do it. It is illegal and you could be charged with a fraud.
A credit repair service that takes to and until your case should hold until all lawfully disputed claims have been corrected. Only then can they ask for payment. As with such negative claims, which can be on your credit report - only the time can enlighten them.
